The area of science on which haptics focuses revolves around "all things automated." Like...that future Chef Ramsay robot that'll make a Denver omelet for you in the morning. The science that'll build that 'bot is haptics.
How much power is needed? How many sensors? How will the whole thing talk to itself and take commands from its overlord owners? Haptics.
