"I stand behind my decision to avoid salad and other disgusting things"

Leslie: Although I've not worked with you professionally, as a private citizen I have personally patronized each and every one of your establishments.

Tanya: Hmm… I've never seen you buy a salad at Sue's Salad.

Leslie: That's 'cause I don't hate myself, Tanya… I'm sorry, I know I should be chasing your vote, but I stand behind my decision to avoid salad and other disgusting things. And I think I have a lot support in the community for that.

Context

This line is spoken by Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, in the TV show Parks and Recreation (2009-2015).

When Leslie decides to run for City Council in Pawnee, she soon discovers that she's not super great at talking herself up. At a campaign event, Leslie approaches some local business owners to ask for their support. After all, she's shopped at their businesses, right? What could go wrong?

But the owner of Sue's Salad is quick to point out that she's never seen Leslie at her store buying a salad. Well, that's because Leslie hates salads. Leslie quickly realizes she shouldn't have insulted a potential voter, but then continues to double down on her dislike of lettuce. Luckily, all the other business owners nod approvingly.

When in doubt, slam salad. It's the popular stance in Pawnee.

Where you've heard it

Have you made the decision to avoid salad and other disgusting things? Then you're not alone. Say this loud and proud for all the Tanyas of the world to hear.

And then buy your own print of Leslie's wise words and take a stand against salad in your kitchen.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote isn't pretentious at all. In fact, it has an air of moral superiority that will make you the hit of any party. Down with lettuce! Down with salads! Yay for bacon!
