Speaker: Groot
I am Groot.
Context
This line was spoken by Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, in the film Guardians of Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (2014).
Along with dance offs against super-serious aliens, 70s pop songs, and a raccoon with machine guns, a trisyllabic tree was one of the highlights of the sleeper-turned-blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot is a Flora Colossus (or tree alien) originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as a one-off villain in a monster comic called Tales to Astonish. For years, he was a Z-list character in the Marvel library, and it seemed like Squirrel Girl, Flat Man, or the Great Lakes Avengers would get a movie before him.
But lucky for us, Groot is a major character in Guardians of the Galaxy and cemented himself as the most adorable petty criminal ever from his first "I am Groot." It turns out that's all he can really say, and we get the line in various intonations. At the end of the movie, he protects his friends and gets a new line of dialogue—"We are Groot."
And if you thought "adult" Groot is adorable, wait until you get a load of baby Groot.
Where you've heard it
Because "I am Groot" can literally mean anything, there's no situation that it can't be used in. So if you've seen Guardians of the Galaxy, you've probably said it at least once when you couldn't think of a witty comeback.

Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
This phrase is cute and can be used in any situation, but don't use it too much or it will wear out its welcome.
