I can't get no satisfaction.
Context
This line is from the song "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones from the album Out of Our Heads (1965).
The Rolling Stones' 1965 counterculture smash "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" gets right to the point. In the first line, lead singer Mick Jagger sings, "I can't get no… sa-tis-fac-tion."
But Jagger isn't giving up: "'Cause I try… and I try… and I try… and I try…"
Why can't he get no satisfaction? Because everything that's being advertised and sold to him (hello, laundry detergent!) doesn't actually bring true satisfaction—unless you're a mindless consumer.
But wait. Does the double negative (surprise English lesson!) mean he actually is getting satisfaction? Or are the Stones just counter-grammar as well as counter-culture?
Where you've heard it
The song has been covered by "Whip-It" band Devo and the princess of 90s pop, Britney Spears.
Satisfied now?
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Not a sucker for advertising? Good. You're about as far from pretentious as you can get…as long as you don't brag about it too much.
