This was freedom. Losing all hope was freedom.

Context

This line is from the novel Fight Club, written by Chuck Palahniuk (1996).

Fight Club is a happy little book about an insomniac who attends support groups for people with terminal illnesses and derives peace from it. This is before he starts a fight club to basically beat the humanity out of men and rebuild it from scratch.

You might think this quote is from the end of one of those brutal fight club matches, but you'd be wrong! It's actually from the beginning of the book, when our narrator is in a testicular cancer support group. He sees how liberating it is for some people to be near death. Hey, that's easy to say when you're not the one dying.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this from your nihilist friend at a cocktail party as you lay paper towels around him to keep his blood from staining your carpet.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

People will probably back away from you slowly if you say this.
