"Old Sport"

"Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he's a gambler." Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly: "He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919."

"Fixed the World's Series?" I repeated. […] "Why isn't he in jail?"

"They can't get him, old sport. He's a smart man."

Context

This quote is from Chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby, but Gatsby calls Nick "Old Sport" throughout the whole book. It's kind of a put-upon way of sounding like old money, which, as we know, Gatsby is not.

Where you've heard it

Have you been spending a lot of time at country clubs recently? If so, you might have heard it there.

That, or you've been doing a Leo marathon on Netflix.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Calling someone "Old Sport" when you are old money is one thing. When you're not? Even worse.
