What a treacherous thing to believe a person is more than a person.

Context

In Paper Towns, your friendly neighborhood protagonist Quentin drops this line as he reflects on how he has constructed a false image of Margo—the girl he's been in love with for, oh, ever.

After searching for her for much of the book, he and his friends finally find her. But she's ungrateful, saying that she doesn't want to be found and that Quentin just wanted a girl to save.

Needless to say, Quentin realizes the Margo he was searching for is very different from the real Margo.

Where you've heard it

This is a favorite quote amongst nerdfighters. It's most often used in a romantic sense, as people often imagine those with whom they are infatuated as perfect—or at least less complex and less fully human, like a damsel in distress.

Maybe Quentin has just watched too many Disney movies?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This one's bit vague and sorta feels like a greasy, literary thing you might say (read: plaster all over your Tumblr page) without really understanding it.
