Source: Oh, Pretty Woman

Speaker: Roy Orbison

"Pretty woman, walkin' down the street."

Pretty woman, walking down the street.
Pretty woman, the kind I like to meet.
Pretty woman!
I don't believe you,
you're not the truth.
No one could look as good as you!
Mercy!

Context

This line is from the song "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees, released as a single (1964).

The song "Oh, Pretty Woman" is basically one long catcall set to music. Think of it as a quainter version of "Blurred Lines."

The singer basically sees a cute girl walking down the street and he calls out to her to come on over and give him a chance. Luckily, his musical melodies work and by the end of the tune, she turns around and heads back over to chat him up. She must have been curious about a guy who wrote a whole song about her. Hopefully he's got more tunes where this one came from.

Where you've heard it

This is a pretty famous song, so between the radio and karaoke night, you've definitely heard other folks busting out these lyrics.

Obviously, the movie Pretty Woman (about the cheery side of prostitution) gets its name from this song.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's not pretentious per se, but think twice before yelling this at someone on the street. Ladies don't actually take too kindly to strangers shouting things at them, even if it's popular song lyrics. It's generally considered a little bit weird. Quote with caution.
