Source: All in the Family

Speaker: Archie Bunker

Stifle.

Context

This word is most often spoken by Archie Bunker, played by Carroll O'Connor, on the TV show All in the Family (1971-79).

Archie Bunker was everyone's favorite TV dad of the 70s, but just because people liked watching him doesn't mean people would want to live with him.

He never kept an opinion to himself, but he sure didn't want to hear anyone else's. And if you went on too long about anything, he would tell you to "stifle," meaning "can it," "put a sock in it," or simply "shut up."

Where you've heard it

You've heard this word any time a cranky old white guy wants you to stop talking. It was most often used by Archie Bunker to his wife, Edith, because she never stopped talking, but All in the Family employed it to great comedic effect when Edith turned the tables on Archie.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Would it kill you to just listen to someone else every now and then?
