Source: Gandhi

Speaker: Gandhi

If you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.

Context

This line is spoken by Gandhi (played by Ben Kingsley) in the movie Gandhi, directed by Richard Attenborough (1982).

Gandhi dominated the 1983 Academy Awards—nonviolently, of course. For real, this movie won everything with its epic tale of the Indian lawyer who could. Could what, you ask? Gain rights for Indians in South Africa and lead a nonviolent revolution in his homeland that shook off British rule. This quote is one of Gandhi's most famous gems of wisdom.

Where you've heard it

This one doesn't get spoofed too much, probably because people generally feel like jerks when poking fun at Gandhi. You've most likely seen this quote on some inspirational poster or another—like this one, or maybe this one.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Yeah, quoting Gandhi might nudge you up the pretentiousness scale, mostly because people will think that you're just not as cool as him.
