"Tonight I can write the saddest lines"

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example, 'The night is shattered
and the blue stars shiver in the distance.'

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me sometimes, and I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Context

This passage is from the poem "Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Lines" by Pablo Neruda (1924).

This poem is all about lost love. Like Adele, Neruda is rolling in the deep. He was really into this lady, but now it's all over. But, the good news is, tonight is finally the night he can get over it. Sure, he might have been moping around for a while, but right now he's gonna write down all his sad feelings and get them out once and for all. That's probably why he repeats this line over and over again—tonight is finally the night it all ends. The poem ends with the declaration, "these are the last verses that I write for her."

Way to get that closure, Pablo. You were probably too good for her anyway.

Where you've heard it

Any sad night is a good night to use this quote. Hey, we've all been there.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Okay, we totally feel for you, but don't go too emo on us, or we're gonna have to seriously bump up the pretentious level on this one.
