Speaker: The Monster
We belong dead.
Context
This line is spoken by the Monster (played by Boris Karloff) in the movie Bride of Frankenstein, directed by James Whale (1935).
In this follow-up to the horror classic, Dr. Frankenstein is convinced by another scientist to create a wife for his infamous flat-headed monster. The Monster is super-psyched when his bride comes to life, but then he's not-so-psyched when she's just not that into him—meaning that she takes one look at him and shrieks in terror. (Can you blame her?) Needless to say, the Monster doesn't take this too well, since he says the line in question just before blowing them both to smithereens. You can watch the whole explosive scene here.
Where you've heard it
The line got a shout-out in an episode of the TV show League of Gentlemen and also an episode of Inspector Lewis, in which a murderer says, "We belong dead" just before committing suicide. You might've also caught a reference to it in Bride of Chucky, including a song off the soundtrack that uses the quote as its title.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
It's a little pessimistic (okay, it's a lot pessimistic), but it's not too pretentious.
