Speaker: Genie
"You ain't never had a friend like me!"
See all you gotta do is rub that lamp and I'll say,
"Mr. Aladdin, Sir,
what will your pleasure be?
Let me take your order,
jot it down."
You ain't never had a friend like me!
Context
This line is from the song "Friend Like Me," written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, from the movie Aladdin (1992).
So you've just found a magical genie in a lamp and you're a little skeptical, right? This guy is gonna grant you three wishes? Say what now? "Friend Like Me" is the Genie's big moment to shine and convince Aladdin that he's the real deal. Seriously. This big blue puff of smoke can give this kid from Agrabah whatever his heart desires. Anything. You know, within reason.
The tune was originally written as a big, jazzy number, but when Robin William was cast that went all out the window. The whole song is one long series of hilarious impressions and increasingly impressive displays of magic. By the time he's done, Aladdin is convinced. The Genie is one friend we'd all like to have.
Where you've heard it
If you've ever had an honest to goodness one-of-a-kind friend (or if you've ever seen Aladdin), you've definitely heard this quote before.
Additional Notable References:
- Ne-Yo has a pretty slick cover of the song, too.
- The song is pretty awesome in the Broadway version of the show, too.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
No one has ever had a friend like the Genie, so we'd say you're pretty safe to quote this line any time and no one will think anything of it. Alakazam!
