- Alex's dad introduces the lodger as Joe.
- Joe, who wears his belt on the outside of his sweater, says he is more like a son to them than Alex is.
- Alex wants to punch him, but the thought makes him sick.
- Dad reveals that all of Alex's things were taken by the police and sold as compensation for the victims.
- Except the snake. He wasn't taken away by the police; he died. RIP, Basil the snake.
- Dad says they can't kick Joe out because he's paid through the end of the month.
- Alex storms out as his mother cries.
