- In present day July, the evening Grace's body was brought to the hotel, Mattie and the girls who work at the hotel get ready for bed. Cook comes in and checks on them.
- Although Cook says to get some good sleep because the next day will be busy, the girls can't, and as soon as she leaves, Ada comes over to Mattie's bed and they talk about Grace.
- Mattie asks Ada if it's important to keep promises, and Ada says of course, especially if the person you made the promise to dies. Ada thinks that if you break a promise to someone who dies, they'll come back and haunt you.
