Character Role Analysis

Dave Burdow

Don't think that this guy is in the book simply because Hunt felt like adding another side story. Dave Burdow's character opens up a Pandora's box of debate about who is the enemy. Because of the circumstances surrounding Mary's death, we think that anyone named Burdow is automatically bad news… but then Dave ends up saving Jethro from Wortman, just like Matt protected Dave's son from the angry mob seeking revenge for Mary's death. Burdow's character is an invitation to a more nuanced understanding of good and evil, which is pretty fitting for an anti-war book.
