"The Birthmark" is really more sexual politics than it is sex. The story explores, among other ideas, the way that our physical self-image can be so altered by the gaze of those around us. In this case, we see the way that Georgiana grows to find herself physically hideous, just because her husband doesn't like the mark on her face.
