Childhood's End Chapter 18 Summary

  • Jeff's dreams begin six weeks later. He tells his parents the dreams take him to a far away place with mountains burning in blue flames. Awesome.
  • Karellen, who is totally spying on the kid, tells Rashaverak to continue the reports but not to interfere.
  • Jeff continues to be a normal kid by day, but his dreams keep taking him farther and farther away from Earth to some truly freaky alien landscapes.
  • The Overlords continue to monitor him, and his dreams are taking him to places even they didn't know existed.
  • Rashaverak drops in on George—just a neighborly visit, you know, catch up, perhaps see how the wife and kids are doing.
  • George mentions that the Overlords promised they'd quit spying on humanity, and Rashaverak crosses his, um, heart (?) and swears they've kept that promise.
  • The Overlords are spying on Jeff, and they don't know what the boy is, just that he's not human.
  • Jennifer Greggson, Jeff's baby sister, goes all Poltergeist and starts lifting her toys into the air without touching them.
  • Rashaverak tells George and Jean there is nothing he can do for the children; the Overlords can only study and observe from here on out.
  • Still, Rashaverak figures he owes them the best he can give. The Overlords have never been humanity's masters, merely their midwives, helping give birth to the new entity humanity will become.
  • As for the children, the Overlord suggests that George and Jean enjoy them while they can.
