David

To an extent, David and Giovanni seem to be jockeying for the role of protagonist. Yet it is David's story, he's the one telling it, and the arch of events depicts his life and not Giovanni's. From the beginning in Brooklyn, our concern is with how David will grow up, with whether or not he will eventually find himself.
