Young Adult, Literature, Fantasy
The Golden Compass is one of those books that doesn't fit into any one genre. Sure, it's a book written for young adults that features coming-of-age themes, but it also tackles really big questions about religion, power, and authority. In other words, it's "Literature" with a capital "L." And sure, the book is definitely a fantasy novel (talking polar bears?). The magical elements and parallel universe-like setting is what draws many readers in.
