Ork Timeline and Summary

  • Ork encounters Grendel in the ring of stone images one snowy night. Grendel pretends he is the Great Destroyer, and Ork falls to his knees in ecstasy.
  • Grendel thinks he might crush the old man and smear the idols with the priest's blood. But he has a better idea. He wants to make the priest squirm before he kills him.
  • Grendel asks Ork about a made-up deity called the King of the Gods. He can't wait to see what kind of BS the priest comes up with.
  • But something surprising happens: Ork delivers a fully developed theology about this fake god. Not only that—it's also a pretty good philosophy. Grendel is dismayed and puts off his killing spree.
  • The other priests appear, and Grendel fades into the darkness. They discuss Ork's "divine encounter," and each priest has a different interpretation of the event.
  • Ork appears again in the meadhall to greet Beowulf and his men. He doesn't care for the newcomers, because he thinks the hero will compete with his gods.
