Not to sound dramatic, but the entire world functions as an antagonist here. All of our main characters are victims to things like violence, accidents, cruelty, poverty, racism – the list goes on. No one person is the source of conflict for our protagonist; no one person is keeping them from their happy ending. Nope, even better: the entire world is out to get them.
