The Quest
Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
Call us crazy, but we think that you can interpret Heracles' Twelve Labors as one giant symbol for life. Heracles goes on a quest to atone for the murder of his children. At the end of the day, he successfully completes this quest. We imagine that he learns a lot about himself and his abilities along the way. He certainly learns that he can beat a giant three-headed dog in a wrestling match. He also learns that he can travel to the land of the dead and come back alive. Yes, he's discovering all kinds of things about himself. Added bonus? At the end of his journey, Heracles becomes immortal.
