- Secretary Stevens says we're here because McCarthy wanted preferential treatment for his guy David Schine. McCarthy says it's because of Communism.
- Stevens lays it out: McCarthy wanted Schine to get a commission for which he was not qualified. So the Army refused and drafted Schine instead. Cohn and McCarthy still wanted him to get special treatment.
- Stevens notes that he's speaking on behalf of the Army and its million and a half men and women serving around the world, not to mention hundreds of thousands of loyal civil servants.
- McCarthy interrupts to take exception to that: he says Stevens is only speaking for himself and a few others. The committee's got nothing against the Army, only the few Communists in it.
- He's shocked that Stevens is hiding behind the Army in order to sabotage the noble efforts of McCarthy's committee.
