If only there were a specific antagonist. Instead, everyone is either (1) mean to her, or (2) taking advantage of her, or (3) thinking nothing of her. Need more evidence that society itself is out to get her? Macabéa dies alone by a gutter, and people just gather around to watch. Like the entire deprived underclass, Macabéa is trampled, beaten, and then finally killed by society.
