Character Analysis
The audience is usually described as an entity in itself, rather than as a bunch of individuals. All of the members generally share the same reactions and attitudes. Even at the height of the artist's popularity, the audience doesn't seem to appreciate him that much. Actually, they view his act as a "joke" that they only watch because it is "all the rage" (1). By the time the artist becomes part of the circus, the audience is either totally uninterested or flat-out rude. The only exceptions are the children, who, even when the hunger artist is no longer in vogue, still watch his performance with wonder.
