Shukhov

We can probably all agree that Shukhov is our protagonist. He's in the title after all, and it is his day we are hearing about. Aside from getting the story from his perspective, Shukhov is also just a decent guy, and we definitely root for him to succeed throughout the text. We also experience the emotion of camp life through Shukhov – he's sort of our eyes and ears for the entire day.
