Obvs, the title is the name of the protagonist. But this is a case in which we definitely need to ask, "What's in a name?" Johnny actually has two: Johnny Tremain and Jonathan Lyte Tremain. He's miserably obsessed with the Lyte family throughout most of the novel, though in the end he chooses to eschew his connection to Lytes, to their old money, and significantly, to the Old World. He chooses to be Johnny Tremain and to make his own way in the New World.
