Lolita Book 1, Chapter 29 Summary

  • Humbert returns to the hotel room. Though dozy, Lolita is not fast asleep and begins mumbling the name Barbara to him. Humbert lays awake all night anxiously listening to the irritating noises of the hotel. Though laying next to her, he dares not make his move.
  • Lolita finally wakes up at 6 am and, Humbert tells us, "by six fifteen we were technically lovers" (1.29.12), but it is she who seduces him! (Or so he says.) Lolita proves to be quite experienced – the one in control.
