The narrator

George Eliot is famous for having her narrator philosophize about what's going on in the story. She draws parallels between the specific experiences of the characters in the novel, and universal human experience. The narrator herself is the moral center of the novel. Dorothea might be admirable in many ways, but the narrator is able to see to the heart of things in a way that Dorothea can't.
