Character Role Analysis

We're Not Sure

A protagonist is a literary work's main/most important character. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, there are so many sets of characters and different lines of action that it's hard to pin down just one protagonist. Some critics argue that Puck is the most important figure in the play because he's the one that makes almost everything happen (to the young lovers and Titania anyway) and also because he embodies the play's mischievous spirit. Other critics argue that all of the play's lovers are protagonists because they're the ones who must overcome the most obstacles in order to achieve happiness. That said, we're open to suggestions, so let us know if you have a better idea.
