Omeros Chapter LVII Summary

i

  • Omeros and the narrator meet a black canoe at the shore that is being piloted by a "ferryman" (think: Charon).
  • It's clearly a ghost ship—the passengers are weightless and the boat has no shadow and no wake.
  • Omeros/Seven Seas are still identity-sharing, so don't get confused—they're both present all the time.
  • As they row away from the island, Omeros sings a song in praise of it, and while the narrator is too tongue-tied at first, he joins in soon after.

ii

  • Charon is drunk and talks like one of the narrator's friends from the island. The narrator is pleased about this.
  • Seven Seas is back again and tells the ferryman to pull over to a lagoon somewhere on the island.
  • Here we see the entrance to the Underworld, St. Lucia-style.

iii

  • Seven Seas points out a ghost fleet that populates the lagoon, and the narrator sees the Comte de Grasse (of Ville de Paris fame) there.
  • Judging by Omeros's reaction, things are about to get heavy.
