Ma Kilman Timeline and Summary

  • We hear the origins of Ma Kilman's No Pain Café.
  • She listens to Seven Seas singing and cannot understand a word he's saying.
  • Philoctete comes in and she sets up "medicinals" to help him cope with his wound-pain.
  • Ma Kilman tries every herbal remedy she can remember on Philoctete's sore, but to no avail.
  • She goes to Mass, and as she prays, she runs through all the plants and herbs she knows, searching her memory for the right one.
  • After Mass, she is drawn to the woods by a rotting smell (like Philoctete's sore) and encounters a line of ants that speak to her in her ancestral language.
  • Ma Kilman is transfigured into a sibyl-obeah figure, releasing herself from her colonized identity and calling out in her ancestral language for Philoctete's cure.
  • She finds the plant and brews it into a healing bath for Philoctete.
  • Ma Kilman bathes him like an old mother, and his wound heals instantly.
  • When Plunkett comes to her to learn news of his dead wife, she tells him that she is happy and that he can speak directly to her if he wants.
  • Back in the café, Ma Kilman gossips with Seven Seas. She tells him of Achille's plan to give Helen's baby an African name and that Philoctete will be its godfather.
  • She is hosting her niece, Christine. She tells Seven Seas about a letter she's had from Statics in Florida and discusses Philoctete's amazing recovery.
