  • Julien notices Mademoiselle when he first moves to Paris to work for Mademoiselle's father, the Marquis de La Mole. He notices that she's physically beautiful, but cold-hearted. He doesn't pay her much attention.
  • Mademoiselle finds Julien interesting because he has opinions that are very different from those of other upper-class French men. Better yet, he makes her feel less bored with her predictable life.
  • Mademoiselle tries to get Julien's attention at a local ball, but he doesn't give her the time of day. He'd rather talk to a guy named Count Altamira about revolutions and politics.
  • Mademoiselle can't handle the fact that some peasant would turn down her advances. She makes a bigger effort and eventually seduces Julien into loving her. The two of them have sex.
  • Once she feels like Julien loves her, Mathilde doesn't care about Julien anymore. She's only interested in what she can't have.
  • Mademoiselle's sexual relationship with Julien flares up again after he threatens to kill her for leaving him. But once again Mathilde loses interest and kicks him to the curb.
  • Julien undertakes a long-term scheme for getting Mathilde back. He sets his sights on another upper-class woman to make Mathilde jealous. It totally works.
  • Mathilde and Julien get back together. Mathilde also tells Julien she's pregnant and they decide to get married.
  • Mathilde's dad objects at first, but eventually comes around. He changes his mind again when he gets a letter from Madame de Rênal saying that Julien is a social climber.
  • Mathilde visits Julien in prison after he has been caught for shooting Madame de Rênal. She begs Julien to plead his case, but he refuses.
  • Julien is executed. Mathilde steals his severed head so she can bury it herself.
