Holmes does actually have a nemesis, Dr. Moriarty, but we don't get to meet him until The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. From story to story in this collection, what Holmes fights is something a little more abstract: cruelty, exploitation, and misunderstanding. He's like Superman in a tweed suit and with a big brain.
