Gawain

Given that he’s one of the title characters, it’s no surprise to find Gawain as the protagonist of this story. In fact, most of the story is narrated from his point of view, with the exception of the very beginning and the hunt scenes. And this is all about his journey, both emotional and geographical. As a typical medieval romance hero, he must travel away from the court in order to learn about himself and return a changed man.
