As the guy who speaks out against rich people's showiness and wastefulness, Ames offers Carrie a brand new—and possibly more helpful—perspective on life. She's definitely influenced by his views; at the end of the novel, she's shifting her career plans based on his advice and reading a book (instead of shopping—a first for her) that he recommended.
