Exactly how steamy is this story?

Things get pretty wild in Steppenwolf, even if the novel doesn't give us all the juicy details. But with the scandalizing propositions happening left and right, you start to get a good idea of what's going on behind closed (or sorta closed, or half-way closed, or even wide open) doors.
Harry starts sleeping with Maria, who's sleeping with pretty much everybody else in town (it's a living!), including Hermine and Pablo. Pablo would like to have some orgy fun with Harry and Maria. Hermine is also pretty experienced, and Harry is saving her for his prize.
It's a little soap operatic, and really steamy. No wonder the free-loving flower children of the 1960s loved this novel so much.
