Character Role Analysis

Caddy and Jason

The two children—Caddy is seven and Jason is five—are opposites of one another. Caddy asks innocent questions of the adults and taunts Jason. Jason, on the other hand, makes demands of the adults and insists that Caddy's taunts are false.

They heighten the irony throughout the story, and their arguing (plus their father's reprimanding) creates the ending image of the tale: the inadequate response of the family to Nancy's plight.
