The Hogbone Sign

Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory

What was that gross thing with the blood on it again? Nancy claims to Mr. Jason that the bloody hogbone by the lamp in her cabin proves Jesus is in the ditch waiting to murder her. She says,

"I got the sign [...] It was on the table when I come in. It was a hogbone, with blood meat still on it, laying by the lamp. He's out there." (5.7-9)

He calls her belief nonsense, but it goes to show just how terrified she is. Nothing can shake her belief that Jesus will attack her. The hogbone just reinforces her conviction.
