The Dark Is Rising Chapter 13 Summary

The Joining of the Signs

  • Will and Merriman talk about how they are experiencing two different times at once—the normal world and the Old World.
  • This is part of the Signs being joined. Will has to gather all of them together in his own time while using his Old One powers.
  • It's the joining of the two that allows Will to be so powerful and withstand the power of the Dark.
  • They make their way to Miss Greythorne's manor and join up with the other Old Ones there.
  • Everyone congratulates Will on the good job he did on his quest for the Signs.
  • The Lady is there and explains to him that each of the Signs is symbolic of a quest they have been on or will go on; they are to protect the Light for the future.
  • When the Dark is rising, the six Signs drive it away.
  • They join the Signs together and then wish Will farewell. He suddenly feels sad to be done with the quest.
  • Yes, it's good to have defeated the Dark and to not have to worry about finding the Signs and figuring out cryptic messages anymore, but he enjoyed the adventure as well.
  • As Will walks home, Merriman catches up with him and gives him some gifts from Miss Greythorne for him to open later.
  • Back at home, his family greets him. His mom's leg is just sprained and she's totally fine, much to Will's relief.
  • Mary rushes out and says sorry for getting lost in the snow, but Will's all no biggie about it.
  • Then she sees Will's carnival mask stuck out in a tree and is pleased.
  • Will doesn't really pay attention to his siblings' conversation, and instead thinks about all he's been through and wonders when the Hunter will reappear.
  • Maybe in the next book in the series, perhaps?
