Intermezzo
- Wednesday, August 12, 1998 (Clare is 27): Clare gets to be with her mother during the last moments of her life, until her body finally surrenders to cancer.
- Saturday, September 12, 1998 (Henry is 35, Clare is 27):Henry reflects on how much Clare's mother loved her garden but that, despite her kindness, she always kept emotionally aloof toward him and toward Clare. He helplessly watches Clare get lost in her own grief, shutting him out of her world.
- Wednesday, November 26, 1998 (Clare is 27, Henry is 35): Looking through her dead mother's belongings, Clare finds a stack of poems. One of them is dedicated to her. She shows it to Henry and in her face he sees that the poem is finally proof that her mother loved her after all.
