The Happar

Character Analysis

Though it first seems as though we're prepping to meet the Happar, we never quite do, at least until we get Toby's story in the final pages of the book. "Happar motarkee," (10.16) we're told: Happar good. Tommo and Toby have been assured that the Happar are the ones who are not the cannibals in these parts.

When Toby leaves the valley with Jimmy, that he sees the Happar where they live. He also discovers that it seems to be more territory, and perhaps old beefs, that make up the conflict between they and the Typee, for their culture seems otherwise quite similar.
