Description:
Some chemicals have chemistry with other chemicals. Whether it's romantic bonding or...less romantic exploding, changes can occur when you put chemicals together. Today's lesson is all about those changes.

Chemical Kevin is growing up. [Flask labelled 'Chemical Kevin']
- 00:05
Like all boy and girl chemicals when
- 00:07
they reach a certain age, Kevin is
- 00:09
starting to experiment with other [Kevin pouring chemicals]
- 00:12
chemicals. It's a new and exciting time

for him, but it's also a little scary.
- 00:16
Most times that Kevin's gone out of his
- 00:18
comfort zone and interacted with another
- 00:20
chemical, there's been some sort of
- 00:21
reaction. Often it's nothing major, but
- 00:23
every once in a while, there are some [Kevin reacting with other chemicals]
- 00:25
real fireworks. And while those fireworks [Kevin turns black]
- 00:27
are worth more than the price of
- 00:29
admission, they're are also enough to scare
- 00:30
the pants off poor Kevin. His parents were [Kevin in his underwear]
- 00:33
never very good at preparing him for
- 00:35
these changes, so he's having to learn
- 00:37
the hard way. The first change he noticed
- 00:39
was a color change. Well, when he hooked up
- 00:41
with Karen, he suddenly traded his pale
- 00:43
blue color for a vibrant green. It was a [Kevin changes color]
- 00:46
welcome change, even if he did suddenly
- 00:48
clash with half his wardrobe. As it was
- 00:50
later explained to him, every chemical
- 00:52
compound basically has a kind of
- 00:54
fingerprint when it comes to color.
- 00:56
Each compound absorbs a certain set of [A light being shone on a chemical]
- 00:58
colors of light, but when it's mixed with
- 01:00
a new compound and the chemical makeup
- 01:02
changes, so does the absorption spectrum. [The chemical is mixed and it changes color]
- 01:06
Kevin was just fine with his new look
- 01:08
though. In fact, people had been telling
- 01:09
him for quite a while that he should go
- 01:11
green. Well the next change Kevin noticed was [Kevin kicks a can]
- 01:14
a change in temperature. When he got [Flames appear]
- 01:16
together with Kelly, things definitely
- 01:18
started to heat up in a hurry. Within
- 01:20
seconds, he'd gone from room temperature [Kevin becoming hot]
- 01:22
to a toasty 92 degrees. What Kevin
- 01:25
learned was that when a chemical
- 01:26
reaction results in the breaking of more
- 01:28
bonds than are formed, extra energy is
- 01:31
required and that energy is ultimately
- 01:34
released, which makes the surroundings
- 01:36
hotter. No wonder the windows were
- 01:38
steaming. As Kevin hopped from one chemical [Steamy car windows]
- 01:40
to another--he wasn't a one-chemical sort
- 01:43
of guy, unfortunately--he experienced all [Kevin meeting other chemicals]
- 01:45
sorts of other changes. One time, he
- 01:48
emitted light; another, he experienced a [Kevin giving off a light beam]
- 01:51
change in volume; and yet another time, he
- 01:54
was suddenly able to conduct electricity, [A electric spark coming from Kevin]
- 01:56
which was a cool party trick. But far and
- 01:58
away the most humiliating episode was
- 02:00
when Kevin started macking on Christina. [Kevin and Kristina on a motorbike]
- 02:03
Well, right in the thick of things, Kevin
- 02:04
noticed that bubbles of gas had begun to
- 02:07
appear. How mortifying. But it wasn't
- 02:09
only the gas. He looked down and sure
- 02:12
enough, a precipitate had formed at the bottom of his
- 02:15
beaker. It was tough to say who wanted [Kevin and Kristina looking unhappy]
- 02:17
out of there faster, Kevin or Christina.
- 02:20
But, as with other reactions, Kevin
- 02:22
eventually learned that what he had
- 02:24
experienced was totally natural. Gas
- 02:26
bubbles and precipitates are both common
- 02:29
results of chemical reactions, although
- 02:31
they don't help to explain those wisps
- 02:33
of hair that have started to appear on [Kevin growing a moustache]
- 02:34
Kevin's upper lip. Well, good luck to
- 02:36
Kevin with all of his future romantic [Kevin on a date]
- 02:38
endeavors. Hopefully he never forgets
- 02:41
it's all about the chemistry.
