No The united states has a long and storied history
- 00:05
of throwing money at problems And in the wake of
- 00:09
world war two there were a lot of problems for
- 00:11
us to throw money at Uh come to think of
- 00:14
it maybe we should find the less costly habit What

do you think But old habits die hard and europe
- 00:19
was a problem It had been destroyed by the war
- 00:22
which was totes an issue of concern for the u
- 00:25
s but the obliteration of roads railroads factories businesses homes
- 00:29
yada yada yada wasn't all we were worried about We
- 00:32
were also worried about the european economy See germany had
- 00:36
spent most of the nineteen thirties feverishly preparing for war
- 00:40
by the time the war actually started prepping for the
- 00:43
conflict was the only thing the german economy knew how
- 00:46
to do And everybody knows it's a bad idea Tto
- 00:49
limit oneself to a single skill set like all the
- 00:52
eggs in one basket thing So after the war we
- 00:54
wanted help the germans figure out how to course correct
- 00:57
economically But wait there's more There was also an economic
- 01:02
imbalance between europe's cities and it's countryside Europe's cities weren't
- 01:06
producing any goods because one of the city's had all
- 01:09
been turned to rubble there were no factories no machines
- 01:13
There were no resource is really to speak of And
- 01:16
because cities weren't producing goods and services to buy and
- 01:19
sell people living in the country also weren't producing goods
- 01:23
and services to buy and sell you know like uh
- 01:26
what is called Oh yeah food In short we were
- 01:30
pretty sure that everybody in europe was about to starve
- 01:32
to death Enter george marshall marshall was an american soldier
- 01:37
who'd served in various parts of the world before becoming
- 01:39
an army chief of staff in nineteen thirty nine He
- 01:42
was the person responsible for injecting the u s military
- 01:46
with steroids so it could actually put up a fight
- 01:48
against the axis powers and is the u s secretary
- 01:51
of state In nineteen forty seven he was the person
- 01:54
who said we'd give europe the money it needed to
- 01:56
get back on her feet Well the u s wrote
- 01:59
a thirteen billion dollars check under the aegis is of
- 02:02
the marshall plan And while the plan may not have
- 02:04
had us much of a hand in the revitalization of
- 02:07
the european economy as we'd like to think it did
- 02:09
it did lay the foundation that allowed europe to come
- 02:12
back swing it by pushing the continent away from strict
- 02:15
economic controls on the other side of the world japan
- 02:19
was obviously in much the same situation as germany it
- 02:22
had to say science ara to an economy focused on
- 02:25
military production and konnichi wa tio not having enough food
- 02:29
to go around and like our japanese there what do
- 02:32
you think the u s spent the first couple of
- 02:34
years after the war reforming japanese politics and ignoring the
- 02:39
country's economic problems But then we totally freaked out as
- 02:43
communism started to spread like a fungus across the world
- 02:47
a red red fungus as people fear it fear it
- 02:50
now what if the japanese decided to join forces with
- 02:53
uncle joe who unfortunately us inge band we're saved by
- 02:58
the korean war Yes we don't make this up people
- 03:01
Not only was the country suddenly awash and raw materials
- 03:05
but it also became the primary supply depot for u
- 03:07
n soldiers But what about china Well normally we like
- 03:11
to spare countries feelings but we're going to be blunt
- 03:14
The country was a disaster after twenty years of war
- 03:18
Now j dong's communists in chiang kai shek's nationalist were
- 03:22
still cat fighting over who got to be in charge
- 03:25
And the national currency was worthless Which is why people
- 03:28
really liked it when the communists gave out ration coupons
- 03:32
for food and clothing George marshall yep that george marshall
- 03:36
tried to get mao and chang to settle their differences
- 03:39
in nineteen forty six but no dice Those two had
- 03:42
been hating on each other far too long Well the
- 03:45
truman administration took a long hard look at the situation
- 03:48
in china It was way more interested in rebuilding europe
- 03:52
then and mucking about in east asia It didn't particularly
- 03:55
think that the chinese communists were any kind of threat
- 03:58
to the u s o and it knew that chiang
- 04:00
kai shek was both a loser and a here So
- 04:03
rather like elsa in the movie frozen us Let it
- 04:07
go Just let it go Let it you know like
- 04:10
that In hindsight this probably wasn't the best idea right
- 04:13
Because unlike elsa chang wasn't full of remorse self loathing
- 04:17
and ice powers that are never really explained she could
- 04:21
Create life like what's up with that were just glossing
- 04:24
over that disney Okay then you've been a disney china 00:04:28.663 --> [endTime] And what do you think
