Odds of Hanging On
Turnover in the car industry is extremely high. It is rare that a salesman will last a whole year at a dealership. Many hop from dealer to dealer, from one type of car to another brand.
January is the most common time for salesmen to get fired or "laid off" due to lack of work. At this point, there's a big lack of customers. Once people have bought cars for Christmas or used that write-off on their taxes, the whole industry freezes up tight.
Better check that last paycheck on your way out the door. While you're getting laid off, you may also find yourself getting shafted from receiving the last commissions you earned. It's called wage theft and the car industry is notorious for practicing it.
