20-Year Prospect
You write software that makes other people's jobs disappear. You're such a jerk, especially since your career field will still be alive and kicking twenty years from now.
You'll be responsible for creating and maintaining the programs behind many of the objects that will (probably) be a part of our everyday lives in the future. Driverless cars, as dreamed up by Google? Computers will run those, and human passengers will get to nap, work, or play a rousing game of Cards Against Humanity instead of drive.
Drones that deliver diapers and other necessities to your front door within a couple of hours of you ordering them on Amazon? Computers will run those, too...and you'll never have to step through the portal into hell that is Walmart ever again.
Technology will never destroy this career field. It can, however, change so fast that you can get left behind. Maybe you aren't so safe after all...(cue ominous music).
