Fame
Maybe. Not likely, but maybe. Jobs, Gates, Wozniak, Zuckerberg, and guys like that are famous but aren't really computer scientists, per se. They developed an extremely lucrative product or series of products. Granted, the PC and the Macintosh changed the face of computing forever, but precious few are able to do anything like that.
And sometimes even the ones who do aren't exactly household names. A page or two ago we brought up Ritchie and Thompson, the creators of UNIX. This concept absolutely reshaped computing, but we're betting very few if any of you had any idea who they were.
