Qualifications

There are no hard and fast requirements for being a promoter; sometimes you won't even need a bachelor's degree. However, you'd better be a natural whiz at budgeting and scheduling, and have an instinctual understanding for locating the ideal market for your product. For those who aren't born with these talents, we recommend a degree in business, marketing, and/or communications, to help you master the ins and outs of managing money and people (both can be unpredictable). Experience in the industry is also highly desirable, usually two years or more, and it's also a good way to discover what projects appeal to you. Grand openings? Art exhibitions? Dog shows? Poetry Slams?

Some schools offer degrees in event management, which usually includes promotion. Or, you may want to consider a degree in music management or music business. Either way, hit those business and marketing courses hard!
