Odds of Getting In
Study hard, get involved, graduate from a quality food science program, and you'll be amazed how valuable an asset you are to prospective employers (source). With only a 4% unemployment rate, you'll be a shoo-in for a position; probably (possibly) in your department of choice.
If you go for the whole block of cheddar and finish out a Master's or PhD, you can be even more confident in your employability for some of the higher-tier career tracks. On the flip side, if you're trying to go the no-school route, some experience in a related scientific field or something on your résumé that will apply to the business end of things will be a great help in not looking like just some wacky person off the street applying for the job.
Lastly, if you've got the entrepreneurial spirit kickin' up a storm inside of you, or if you find yourself having trouble finding employment, you can always join the ranks of the self-employed, a category that accounts for as many as 16.3% of Food Scientists (source).
